Training

Our training opportunities extend beyond traditional academic pathways to programs for Traditional Owners and industry partners. These programs are co-designed with their target audiences and are part of the Centre’s broader work to transform cultural heritage management in Australia.

Accreditation for Traditional Owners

We are co-developing a world-first program with Traditional Owners to gain accreditation from Flinders University as archaeologists and cultural heritage consultants.

Traditional Owners hold an extensive body of cultural knowledge about their heritage that can surpass that of formally trained archaeologists. However, many face structural barriers to receiving a university education.

The program will recognise the cultural knowledge that Traditional Owners already hold and offer flexible delivery – on Country, in Adelaide or through standalone short courses.

This two-way exchange will enrich archaeological training and research, including best-practice training models for Indigenous peoples.

Training for the mining industry

We have partnered with AusIMM – Australia’s peak body for resources professionals – to develop and deliver archaeology training for the mining industry.

These professional development sessions will help executives, mine managers and operational staff build a deeper understanding of the archaeological significance and complexity of Indigenous cultural heritage.

This training supports mining leaders to make more informed decisions around cultural heritage, lowering the risk of incidents or delays, strengthening relationships with Traditional Owners, and meeting public commitments to heritage protection.
